Steeped with Victorian history, Weston-super-Mare is located at the gateway to the South West of England.
Weston really has it all! The wonderful sweep of Weston Bay, with views over to Wales and down to Exmoor is a never ending source of satisfaction. The sea goes out and comes in a long way – the second highest tidal rise in the world, which is why Weston super Mare has its piers. Originally they were deep water steamboat jetties, but soon people discovered the fun of just walking out to sea on them to take tea and visit the amusements.
The New Birchfield Hotel is a family run hotel in a prime position on Weston’s beautiful seafront. Extensive refurbishment has bought all areas of the hotel up to an excellent standard. All the bedrooms offer en-suite facili-ties, telephone, TV, hair dryers and hospitality tray. Enjoy tasty meals served in the Knightstone restaurant which offers fantastic sea views. There is a fully licensed and well stocked bar where there’s nightly entertainment including live shows. For something quieter you’ll find a spacious lounge leading to the sun terrace which has superb views over Weston Bay.
Our first visit of the week is to Brunel’s SS Great Britain, Bristol. Be sure to head beneath the glass sea, walk the SS Great Britain’s history in the Dockyard Museum and step onto the ship itself. Alive with sights, sounds and even smells, prepare to ‘set sail’ on the most extraordinary time machine.
Afterwards, enjoy some free time in Bristol – If ever there was a city with a story to tell, it’s Bristol. Enveloped in the hills of South West England, it has its own unmistakable identity, grounded in roots from centuries past and carved out since by passionate locals and spirited fans.
Today we’ll set out to the seaside resort of Minehead, with it long flat sandy beach, the promenade with its cafes, bars and shops – there’s plenty to see and do for everyone: the picturesque harbour with it RNLI station and shop which also hosts summer please boat cruises on the paddle steamer Waverley and motor vessel.
Just a short stroll from the seafront is the beautiful Blenheim Gardens, bandstand, a café and a putting green to enjoy – one thing is for certain, you won’t be short of things to do on this day trip.
